Harm Reduction Guide
What to do when too high
You are safe. No one has died from a cannabis overdose. The feeling is temporary. Most peaks pass within 30 to 90 minutes for smoking or vaping, and 4 to 8 hours for edibles. Below is the 5-step protocol used by harm-reduction educators, cannabis nurses, and dispensary safety guides.

The 5-step calm-down protocol
- Tell yourself you are safe. Out loud if you can. The feeling is temporary, it will pass, and you are not in medical danger.
- 4-7-8 breathing. Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds. Hold for 7. Exhale slowly through the mouth for 8. Four cycles minimum. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system and lowers heart rate within 60 seconds.
- Hydrate and ground. Cool water in small sips. Then 5-4-3-2-1 grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste.
- Distract with comfort. A familiar movie, a favorite album, a guided breathing visual. Avoid scary content, news, and decision-heavy apps.
- Wait. Lie down in a cool, dim room. The peak passes. Sleep if you can.
People often add a sniff of black pepper, a chew of lemon zest, or a cold shower. Some find a few drops of CBD oil reduce the intensity within 20 minutes. If you have severe chest pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, or hallucinations that frighten you, call SAMHSA at 1-800-662-4357 (US) or Health Link 811 (Canada).
Smoking
Peak: 30 minutes. Fade: 2-4 hours.
Inhalation effects come on within minutes and peak fast. The intense feeling almost always softens within an hour.
Edibles
Peak: 1-3 hours. Fade: 6-8 hours.
Edibles are the most common reason people feel too high. They are slow, intense, and longer-lasting. Eat a real meal, hydrate, and prepare to ride it out somewhere comfortable.
Vaping
Peak: 15-30 minutes. Fade: 1-3 hours.
Vape effects mirror smoking but can hit harder due to higher THC concentrations. Same protocol works.

How long does being too high last?
Smoked highs peak within 30 minutes and fade in 2-4 hours. Edibles peak at 1-3 hours and fade in 6-8 hours. The intense feeling almost always passes within 90 minutes.
Can you overdose from cannabis?
No one has died from a cannabis overdose alone. THC does not suppress breathing the way opioids do. You can feel awful, but the symptoms always pass.
Does black pepper help?
Anecdotally yes. The terpene beta-caryophyllene in black pepper may blunt THC anxiety. It is harmless to try a small chew or sniff.
Does CBD help bring me down?
CBD oil under the tongue or vaped can reduce THC intensity within 15-30 minutes for many people. It is one of the most reliable interventions if you have it on hand.
Should I go to the ER?
Only if you have chest pain that does not pass, repeated vomiting, fainting, or hallucinations that genuinely frighten you. For most people, the answer is to wait it out at home. Call SAMHSA 1-800-662-4357 (US) or Health Link 811 (Canada) if you are unsure.
