You're going to be okay.
If you are too high right now and reading this from anywhere in Ireland — sit down, take a breath, and read the next five steps. The feeling, however intense, will pass within 30-90 minutes for smoked cannabis and a few hours for edibles. No one has died from a cannabis overdose. You are safe.

The 5-step calm-down
1. Sit or lie down somewhere dim and familiar
Bed. Couch. The floor with a blanket. Anywhere quiet. Turn off bright overhead lights — leave one lamp on if you don't want full dark. Pause anything loud, scary, or fast-moving on screens. Familiar smells help; if there's a kettle, put one on for tea.
2. Sip cool water
Slowly. Not chugged. Cold water in the mouth triggers the mammalian dive reflex, which slows heart rate within seconds. A glass is enough. If you have ice, even better.
3. 4-7-8 breathing — four cycles
Inhale quietly through the nose for 4 seconds. Hold for 7. Exhale through the mouth, slowly, for 8. Repeat four times. The long exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the off-switch for fight-or-flight. Most people feel a noticeable shift by cycle two.
If counting in your head feels hard right now, the homepage has a breathing orb that paces it for you.
4. 5-4-3-2-1 grounding
- Name 5 things you can see.
- 4 you can touch.
- 3 you can hear.
- 2 you can smell.
- 1 you can taste.
Out loud is even better than in your head. This works because it forces external focus and breaks the internal anxiety loop.
5. Wait it out warmly
Tuck a blanket tight around you — pressure on the body is calming. Put on a familiar album or a comfort show you've seen ten times. Sip more water. Eat a small familiar snack — toast with Kerrygold and honey is a classic Irish move. The peak fades within 30-90 minutes for smoking and 2-6 hours for edibles. The feeling will pass.

If a friend is too high — how to help
- Stay calm. Your tone is contagious. Speak slowly and quietly.
- Get them to a quiet, dim room. Lights down, screens off.
- Bring water. Sit beside them, not in front of them. Match their breathing.
- Remind them — out loud — that no one dies from being too high. Say "this will pass." Repeat it gently.
- Do not give them more cannabis to "calm down." Do not give them alcohol. If they have CBD oil, a few drops can help over 20-40 minutes.
- If chest pain or breathing problems are severe, call 999 or 112. Paramedics treat the medical issue, not the cause.
Common questions
Can I die from being too high?
No. There has never been a confirmed death from cannabis overdose. The intense discomfort is real but temporary. Risk increases with alcohol mixed in or an underlying heart condition.
Will the HSE or Garda get involved if I call?
No. The HSE Drug & Alcohol Helpline is a health service, not law enforcement. They will not report you. Ambulances treat the medical issue, not the cause.
How long will the peak last?
Smoking: 30-90 minutes before the worst passes. Edibles: 1-3 hours to peak, 6-8 hours to fully fade.
What is the fastest way to feel less high?
Cool water + 4-7-8 breathing + dim familiar room. Optionally CBD oil sublingual, black peppercorns chewed, a cool shower, and sleep if you can manage it.
